BULLETIN # 2

1. Dates and Place.

The Xth Baksan School "Particles and Cosmology" will be held on April 19-25, 1999, at the tourist hotel "Cheget" located in the upper Baksan Valley, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russian Federation (about 1500 km south from Moscow). Arrival date from Moscow to the School's site - through the Mineralnye Vody airport as the best way - is April 18, departure back to Moscow on April 26.

2. Visas and Invitations.

Russian visa can be obtained from the Consulate on the basis of the invitation which we will send directly to the Consulate. To arrange this invitation, we need the information requested by the attached Registration Form (*) as soon as possible. We would greatly appreciate it if you fill in the form and send it to us via e-mail. Please, provide us with the separate forms for each accompanying persons as well. If you have any problems with this form, please, contact us immediately by e-mail. We will let you know as soon as the Consulate is ready to issue the visa.

In the case you need an official invitation for other purposes than just to obtain visa, please, do not hesitate to contact us.

If you plan to give lectures at the School, please, do not forget to include the corresponding preliminary titles in the form.

3. The Conference Fee and Accommodation.

The total cost of local expenses is 450 US dollars. This amount includes 100 US dollars of the registration fee, lodging and meals in the tourist hotel "Cheget", transportation from the Mineralnye Vody airport to Cheget and back, transportation in Moscow from airports to hotels on the arrival and departure days, and two nights 17/18 and 26/27 April in Moscow. The payment of the total cost must be made to the Organizing Committee. We will accept Russian roubles, US dollars and German marks, cash only. The Organizing Committee will take care of your accommodation in Moscow (hotel "Sputnik", Leninsky prospect 38, in 10 minutes on foot from our Institute) and in the Baksan Valley (tourist hotel "Cheget", located right at the foot of the famous ski-sloping mount Cheget) and transportation from/to the airports to/from the hotels on the arrival and departure days. To this end, we need your exact itinerary.

Besides, if you like to spend some lovely days in Moscow after the School, please, let us know, and we will arrange additional hotel reservations and local transportation for you.

4. Arrival to Moscow and Mineralnye Vody.

Someone from INR staff-members, carrying the School poster, will meet you at the airport upon your arrival (in Sheremetyevo or Vnukovo). Please, send us by e-mail your exact and complete flight information as soon as you have it. Please, do not leave the airport without finding a receiving person. It is very unlikely that we miss each other upon your arrival in Moscow, however, in such a `horrible' case, please, call the Organizing Committee, phone 135 20 51 (or: 133 65 33, 135 77 60).

The Organizing Committee will also take care of your meeting at the Mineralnye Vody airport and further transportation to the hotel "Cheget". For this matter, your exact and complete itinerary is absolutely necessary. And so, please, inform us as soon as you get it fixed.

5. Money.

Money exchange of US dollars and German marks is possible in various banks. At present, $1 is equal to approximately 22 roubles. Although currencies other than $US and DM can be exchanged in some Moscow banks, the rates are very unfavorable. We recommend you to have cash rather than credit cards or checks, because only a few places in Moscow accept them. Credit cards and checks are useless in the Baksan Valley.

6. Weather, Snow Condition, and All That.

The weather in April in the upper Baksan Valley is pretty cold (+10 to +15 degrees Celsius in average), but sunny; some humid days are also possible. However, good powder of snow on the Cheget and Elbrus slopes, just excellent for downhill skiing, is virtually guaranteed. A kind of social programme based on skiing and mountaineering is a specific feature of the Baksan Schools. In addition, the Organizing Committee will offer the participants a visit to the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of INR.
